I finally more or less gave up on Mediacom and ordered Frontier DSL (3MB down/768 up) service. It seems to be working well. (I'm somewhat impressed, given that my phone lines are very old but in very good shape. I was also expecting some minor trouble with the long line run I made from the basement to my room.)
Only later did I realize that I'm not sure if Frontier provides access to Usenet. Amazingly, Mediacom still does.
This may not be the end of the story just yet. More on that later.
