Typhoon Meranti, the 14th storm to hit China this year, made landfall in the coastal city of Xiamen in east China's Fujian Province early Thursday, bringing strong winds and downpours.
The typhoon, packing hurricane-force winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour, slammed into Xiamen's coast at around 03:05 Thursday after plowing past the island of Taiwan.
Wind and rain knocked out power to some parts of the city, and shut down all local highways.
